Fortran to C
Section titled “Fortran to C”Fortran-to-C Legacy Migrations
Section titled “Fortran-to-C Legacy Migrations”Since 1982, Great Migrations (GM) and its predecessor, Promula Development Corporation (PDC), have developed a number of modernization tools, which they have applied to hundreds of successful modernization projects worldwide.
Central to these modernization projects is the use and customization of the following tools:
- gmFortran, a Fortran to C Translator (as evolved from promulaFortran over the past forty years)
- gmBasic: a Visual Basic to .NET modernization tool (also an ASP to .NET modernization tool)
- gmStudio, an integrated environment for upgrading large-scale VB6- and/or ASP-based applications to .NET
Some of the gmFortran migration projects are summarized here.
Babcock and Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc. - Power Engineering Applications
Section titled “Babcock and Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc. - Power Engineering Applications”Using gmFortran in a 5-month effort, B&W Power Generation Group upgraded its extensive portfolio of power engineering applications (about 700,000 lines of FORTRAN 77 code comprising 50 programs) into a suite of C-based applications running on the Windows/Visual Studio .NET platform. The upgrade was verified in terms of a comprehensive Acceptance Test comprised of more than 50,000 test cases.
GE Capital Corporation — FLAP Re-engineering Project
Section titled “GE Capital Corporation — FLAP Re-engineering Project”Using gmFortran in a 12-month effort, GE Capital re-hosted its Financial Lease and Loan Analysis Program (FLAP) to Unix by converting its legacy FORTRAN code to C and by re-engineering its IBM Mainframe/MVS/IDMS database infrastructure into a SUN Solaris/Unix/Oracle database platform. The upgrade was verified in terms of a comprehensive Acceptance Test comprised of more than 60,000 test cases.
Meyer Utility Structures LLC - Structural Design and Engineering Applications
Section titled “Meyer Utility Structures LLC - Structural Design and Engineering Applications”Using gmFortran in a 6-month project, Meyer Utility Structures LLC upgraded its Decant applications from a FORTRAN-based, proprietary platform to a contemporary C-based, open-systems platform. Decant (Design of a Cantilever Pole System), is a suite of structural design and engineering software, comprising 55 main programs in a 255K-line Fortran codebase.
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center - VLBI Field System
Section titled “NASA Goddard Space Flight Center - VLBI Field System”Using gmFortran in a 6-month project, NASA GSFC upgraded its Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Field System from Fortran to C, on a Linux 32-bit platform. In use at more than 30 observatories around the world for running VLBI observations, FS is a suite of about 100 programs and libraries, comprising about 1,300K lines of Fortran 77 code.
Profitool -Construction MIS
Section titled “Profitool -Construction MIS”Using promulaFortran, Profitool ported its CMIS (Construction Management Information System) product from the PRIME platform to a number of open UNIX platforms, including the IBM RS6000 and the HP-UX workstations, and delivered it construction firms worldwide.
KIWI -Paper Packaging MIS
Section titled “KIWI -Paper Packaging MIS”KIWI used promulaFortran as its multi-platform Fortran compiler to support KIWIPLAN - its manufacturing control system - on a number of C-based platforms (Data General AOS/VS, Data General Aviion, Hewlett Packard MPE/XL, Hewlett Packard UX, DEC VAX/VMS, i386/i486 UNIX, and IBM RS/6000 AIX) and deliver it to paper packaging companies worldwide.
New York City Transfer Authority -Transportation Scheduling Applications
Section titled “New York City Transfer Authority -Transportation Scheduling Applications”Using promulaFortran, NYCTA ported its transportation scheduling applications from the PRIME platform to the HP 9000/UX platform via translation to C.
Computer Sciences Corporation -Remittance Processing System
Section titled “Computer Sciences Corporation -Remittance Processing System”Using promulaFortran, CSC migrated its Remittance Processing System from a FLEX Fortran dialect, on a Data General platform, to a Windows NT platform via automatic translation to C and application rehosting.
Nemetschek AG, Muenchen, Germany -Commercial CAD Applications
Section titled “Nemetschek AG, Muenchen, Germany -Commercial CAD Applications”Using promulaFortran, Nemetschek ported its commercial CAD applications to multiple platforms (Windows NT, Unix) via translation to C.
SUMMIT Information Systems, A FISERV Company -Financial Applications
Section titled “SUMMIT Information Systems, A FISERV Company -Financial Applications”Using promulaFortran, SUMMIT ported its Credit Union Management System, SPECTRUM, from Fortran to C on the HP 3000 MPE/iX platform.
Sky Computers, Inc. -Fortran 77 Compiler for the SKYstation
Section titled “Sky Computers, Inc. -Fortran 77 Compiler for the SKYstation”Sky Computers used promulaFortran as a Fortran77 compiler for its SKYstation computer, under the name SKYVEC77. SKYstation is an i860-based, 64-bit accelerator board for SUN Microsystems computers.
ESRI -GIS Applications
Section titled “ESRI -GIS Applications”ESRI - a leading provider of commercial geographical information systems (GIS) - used promulaFortran to deliver and support its GIS software on a number of platforms: PC-DOS, PC-Windows, SUN Microsystems, and the Apple Macintosh.
Innovative Computing Engineering (ICE) — XMIDAS Digital Signal Processing
Section titled “Innovative Computing Engineering (ICE) — XMIDAS Digital Signal Processing”Using promulaFortran, ICE upgraded XMIDAS — a Fortran-based software tool kit used widely by the defense and intelligence communities for developing digital signal processing (DSP) applications and performing DSP analysis. Originally developed in Fortran for the mainframe (HP, VAX, CRAY), XMIDAS now runs on various brands of Linux-32bit or Linux-64bit (e.g., x86_32, x82_64, PowerPC-32, PowerPC-64, MIPS-32, and MIPS-64).
MCI Network Services -Network Services Billing System
Section titled “MCI Network Services -Network Services Billing System”Using promulaFortran, MCI (now VerizonBusiness) rehosted three legacy applications - Network Services Billing, Network Order Entry System, and Phone Access Database - from a legacy source platform — DEC 36-bit mainframe hardware, TOPS/ICS operating system, XF4 Fortran/KCC C codebase, System1022 database — to a contemporary target platform — IBM RS6000 hardware, AIX operating system, ANSI C codebase, ORACLE database.
Teradyne -Computer Hardware Testing
Section titled “Teradyne -Computer Hardware Testing”Using promulaFortran, Teradyne converted to C its VAX/VMS Fortran-based computer hardware testing commercial applications.
Cimatron Ltd. -CAD/CAM Software
Section titled “Cimatron Ltd. -CAD/CAM Software”Using promulaFortran, Cimatron brought its CAD/CAM software package to open systems, via translation to C, and to its clients worldwide.
BPX -Oil Exploration Data Analysis
Section titled “BPX -Oil Exploration Data Analysis”Using promulaFortran, BPX ported its Fortran-based applications from VAX and Cray mainframe computers to UNIX workstations, such as the IBM RS/6000, the SUNSPARC station, and the Silicon Graphics IRIS system.
Chevron -Oil Exploration Data Analysis
Section titled “Chevron -Oil Exploration Data Analysis”Using promulaFortran, Chevron converted all of its exploration data management and analysis software from VAX/VMS Fortran to VAX/VMSC and SUN UNIX.
Dellab -Laboratory MIS
Section titled “Dellab -Laboratory MIS”Using promulaFortran, Dellab, a provider of laboratory information management software for the chemical industry, ported its Fortran-based software from the DEC PDP platform to the 386 Interactive UNIX platform.
Kohler Ingenierburo
Section titled “Kohler Ingenierburo”This consulting group used promulaFortran in several Fortran-to-C conversion projects in Germany.
Grey Matter, Ltd.
Section titled “Grey Matter, Ltd.”Grey Matter, Ltd., as our reseller in the United Kingdom, provided promulaFortran to several clients in Europe.
Salomon -Financial Analysis
Section titled “Salomon -Financial Analysis”Using promulaFortran, Salomon Technology Services ported its Fortran-based analytical applications from the PRIME/PRIMOS platform to the SUN/UNIX platform.
Gratham Mayo -Financial Analysis
Section titled “Gratham Mayo -Financial Analysis”Using promulaFortran, Gratham Mayo migrated its Fortran applications to C for use on UNIX workstations.
TRW -Department of Defense
Section titled “TRW -Department of Defense”Using promulaFortran, TRW was able to convert to C on a SUN Microsystems platform a mission-critical Fortran application for their Department of Defense clients.
Department of Defense Software Conversions
Section titled “Department of Defense Software Conversions”Various DOD and Department of Commerce sites used promulaFortran in support of of converting their Fortran-based applications to C.
University Engineering Applications
Section titled “University Engineering Applications”Using promulaFortran, the Department of Aeronautical Engineering of the Texas A & M University converted its CAD applications to C and UNIX platforms.
Using promulaFortran, the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Waterloo, Ontario, converted its engineering applications to C.
Using promulaFortran, the University of Oklahoma converted a number of its Fortran-based Computer Science applications to C.
Using promulaFortran, the Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas converted to C a library of biostatistical functions.
Using promulaFortran, Queen’s University of Kingston Ontario migrated to Unix its IBM mainframe Fortran projects.
SABCO -Pharmacy MIS
Section titled “SABCO -Pharmacy MIS”Using promulaFortran, SABCO, a supplier of medical computer systems in Europe, ported its pharmacy MIS application from a DEC PDP platform to a PC, C-based platform.
United Airlines -UNIMATIC Modernization Project
Section titled “United Airlines -UNIMATIC Modernization Project”Using promulaFortran, UAL converted some of its flight scheduling and operations applications from an ’old’ Fieldata Fortran-based platform, on a UNISYS mainframe, to a contemporary C-based platform via automatic Fortran-to-C translation.
Other Fortran Conversion Projects
Section titled “Other Fortran Conversion Projects”Since 1982, many of our clients worldwide have licensed and used promulaFortran in self-service mode to convert their Fortran applications to C and port them successfully (in a timely and cost-effective manner) to several C-based target platforms. Most of these modernizations were done by the client using the tool alone in self-service mode, with little or no support from PDC, and produced functionally equivalent Fortran-to-C modernizations in turnkey fashion.
